Key Qualities of a Good Internship

Key Qualities of a Good InternshipKey Qualities of a Good InternshipFinding a great internship is what most students strive for but how do you know if your internship is a great one if youre not sure what type of experience it is that you want, or if you havent established any goals to know what you hope to accomplish? Goals A great internship provides the knowledge and skills required to become successful in a specific career field. The most amazing internship experiences are those that prepare students for the work they hope to do after graduating from college. Employers seek employees who have the experience required to start out in a new field. Employers also welcome new employees who have already had exposure to the field and understand the type of work they will be doing once they are hired. Employers spend a great deal of time and money on training their new employees, and they know that they can eliminate a lot of this time by hiring someone with previous knowledge and expe rience. The Importance of Interns Being Teamed with a Mentor Interns who are teamed up with a berater within the company are most likely the ones who will best learn about the organizations culture and what it takes to be recognized by the companys management team and ultimately to become more successful on the job. In addition to the knowledge and skills employers look for in new candidates, individuals who get along and understand the organizations culture are often seen as top candidates for any full-time jobs that open up. Often employers feel that they can teach the basics of an entry-level job, but they cant make a new employee fit into a culture thats already been established. Compensation Isnt Necessarily Reflective of a Great Internship Although most interns would prefer to get paid, the fact that an internship is paid does not always qualify it as a good internship. There are many amazing unpaid internships in the nonprofit world that provide great experience and e xposure to the field. Although the Department of Labors Internship Guidelines is becoming stricter in requiring for-profit companies to pay their interns, the fact that your internship is paid does not make it better than other internships where pay is not an option. If you are set on getting a job in the nonprofit world, real-world experience may be required to get hired for a full-time although the perspektive to get paid to learn in these types of environments is rare. In this case, its important for students to identify their personal goals before they make a decision that theyll only accept a paid internship. The Chance to Make Professional Connections Internships that provide opportunities to meet a large number of professionals currently working in the field are those experiences that give students the chance to make important professional connections that can last a lifetime. Since networking is considered to be the 1 job search strategy, the chance to meet professionals both in and outside of the organization where youre interning can be most valuable as you begin your job search as you get closer to graduation. Take the opportunity to discuss your future goals with professionals in the field in hopes of including them in your own personal network. Additional Benefits and Perks Internships that offers a good salary, benefits, and perks are often seen as the dream internship that everyone strives for. There are many organizations that pay interns quite well in addition to offering them many benefits that full-time employees have including health and dental. Some organizations offer a variety of perks, such as concert tickets, networking receptions, gym memberships, plus much more. An organization that offers these types of benefits to their interns also offer great benefits to their current employees. By creating internship and individual career goals, you will be able to find the right internship for you. One persons perfect internship is usua lly not the same for other individuals who have their own set of personal goals and expectations.

Why I Spoke to My Boss About My Insecurities - The Muse

Why I Spoke to My Boss About My Insecurities - The MuseWhy I Spoke to My Boss About My Insecurities I recently ran into a bit of a snag on a project I welches working on. And no matter what I tried, it just felt like I was never going to get it right. So, after staring at the same document for a couple of days, I did something I never thought Id do I told my boss I was having a hard time and opened up about how insecure this made me feel. At first, I immediately regretted approaching her. After all, shes my boss, and not only do I respect and admire her, I was afraid of looking completely lost in front of her. But, when she gave me the exact confidence boost I needed, I ended up learning some valuable lessons about admitting that I wasnt feeling my best. 1. Not Getting Something Right the First Time Doesnt Make You Bad at Your JobI tend to be hard on myself, even though as a full-time writer, I know that very few people write first drafts that are just so good, their editors say, Thi s is incredible, lets just run it However, its totally understandable for people in any line of work to feel like theyre just the worst because their first reisepass at something didnt go as planned. Of course, this isnt something Im typically good at understanding, because like everyone else, I dream of being the exception. But heres what I have to remember Sometimes my first drafts are strong, and other times, theyre just a little more challenging than anticipated. But, that doesnt make me bad at my job. And it doesnt make you bad at yours, either. 2. Admitting You Need Help Makes You a Better TeammateIm fortunate enough to work with some insanely smart people on a daily basis, so I put a lot of pressure on myself to get things done without much help. And although my mother would probably approve of this mindset to a certain extent, theres one serious flaw with this kind of thinking. If you dont understand something, you actually could be holding back your team from getting someth ing critical done. Whats worse, nobodys going to know how much youre struggling if you dont speak up for yourself. So, when I fessed up to my boss about how down I was feeling, not only did I get the confidence boost I needed, I also got the chance to talk the project out with her. And ultimately, we realized it was a project that required more thought, would take more time, and require me to ask a few other people some additional questions. All good things, right? From where Im sitting, theyre all things I would have never realized if I hadnt gotten up the courage to admit I was stuck. 3. Even the Most Experienced People Need a Little EncouragementThe more people I talk to about this whole thing, the more that I realize that some of the most talented people I know run into this problem, too. While it was a little bit of a shock to me at first, it makes perfect sense. Because who on the face of this earth knows what theyre doing 100% of the time. And how many people, no matter how s mart they are, have gone their entire lives without asking for a little bit of help? Sure, there are plenty of people out there who havent asked outright for a bit of a confidence boost, but Id wager that nobody you know has done his or her job without asking for assistance at one point or another. Sometimes when youre working hard, you hit a wall. And when you hit that wall, its perfectly OK to ask for a few words of encouragement, even if youre the best at whatever it is you do for a living. Im sure there are plenty of people who would mucksmuschenstill feel uneasy about going up to a boss or colleague and saying, Hey, this projects making me feel like an idiot. Can you remind me why I was chosen to lead it? And Ill admit that it still makes me uncomfortable, especially since I still havent figured out how to stop beating myself up when I dont do something perfectly. But, every time Ive asked for a little help, I remembered that saying those words aloud doesnt cause the world to c ollapse. And when I asked for a little bit of a pep talk from my boss recently, I didnt get fired or lose her trust. If anything, I became a little better at my job in ways I wouldnt have if I hadnt spoken up about how I was feeling a little lost. So, next time you need that confidence boost, think about straight up asking for it. And, taking this concept a little further, the next time you see a colleague struggling give him or her a few words of encouragement yourself.

Meet Hyperloop One Process Development Engineer, Kate McCarthy. If youre interested in joining her team, click here to see all available opportunities at Virgin Hyperloop One and dont forget to press Follow to receive custom job matches, event invitations and more One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 1000000 construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel neuschpfung/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-g ender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 mill ion managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentierung technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line worke rs ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

This Weekly Activity Will Give Your Job Search a BoostThis Weekly Activity Will Give Your Job Search a BoostLooking for a new job can be one of the most stressful experiences in life. It is made even more stressful when you do not have a job. It is also hard to tell exactly what you have accomplished throughout the week when you are mucksmuschenstill unemployed as the weekend rolls around. This post will give you advice on a weekly activity that is sure to give your job search a boost. Most importantly, this activity will help you avoid becoming discouraged. A common way in which job seekers hurt themselves during a job search is the disappointment from a previous bewerbungsinterview spills over into the next job interview. Usually, the expectation of failure and nothing being accomplished breeds negative results. And all of this could have been avoided with this weekly activity. The weekly activity that gives your job search a boostIt is so simple you may kick yourself when you read t he next sentence.Keep track of your accomplishments - big or smallOne of the worst feelings to experience during a job search is when you finish out the week feeling like you have done nothing. That may be what you are feeling but only because you did not keep track of what really happened. For example, imagine you have an interview on Monday and it did not go so well. You block the interview out of your mind as lost. Meanwhile, you forget to keep track of the people you met and ideas you had during the interview. You forget key networking possibilities because you did not keep track of your accomplishments.Big accomplishmentsThe biggest accomplishment of all would be for you to get hired. But depending on the job it can take as little as three hours to get hired or as long as four months.Until then, keep track of some of your big accomplishments such asInterviews that went well and the number of interviews you hadWho you met during the interviewWhat you did well in the interviewWhy you got the job interview in the first placeWhat kind of companies you have been interviewing withSometimes, especially when you get in a bad mood about the outcome of job interviews it is easy to take the extreme point of view, I failed and that made everything I did wrong. Thinking this way negates everything you did that was right because of one minor misstep. Your big accomplishments get lost.Small accomplishmentsSmall accomplishments in a job search can includePersonal discoveries about jobs you thought you wantedWays you saved money while job searchingIdeas that came to you during the interview processPeople you connected with on LinkedIn because of the interviewCertain lessons you learned about resumes, interviews, or how you should dressUltimately, you may be achieving more than you realize but you are not keeping track of it. As your job search continues and the need to stay motivated intensifies, you will need to look at your accomplishments to remind yourself, I am doing what I should be doing. And I will be successful. How to track your accomplishmentsA great way to track your accomplishments is to categorize them. For exampleSetting an interview goal for 30-daysWhat is your reward when you meet that goal?Amount of times you received feedbackWhat was the feedback?Amount of interviews you felt you handled with confidenceWhy did you feel confident?Amount of times you impressed hiring managers with your answersWhat questions do you answer better than others?Amount of times you learned something new about yourselfWhat did you learn exactly?Amount of times you felt proud after an interviewWhat were you most proud of?At the end of the day, the importance of doing this is to make sure you keep reminding yourself that you are achieving things. You are growing, hacking away at all the unnecessary things you worry aboutand you are becoming skilled at describing your value through critical thinking. Finally, the better you get at tracking your accomplishments t he more you start to understand what makes you valuable to a company

Is Your Career Age Holding You Back

Is Your Career Age Holding You BackIs Your Career Age Holding You Back3Norwegian scientists have come up with a low-tech way to allow a person to figure out their fitness age, and the result are often surprising. If we could figure out our career age, maybe we could discover surprising revelations about ourselves and things we need to tweak in our job searches that might help us reach a whole new level of career fitnessA career age assessment might mean thinking about how you approach your career choices, how long youve remained stuck unhappily in the same job with the same platzdeckchen of out-dated career skills, and drawing up a plan for change. Here are five suggestions for changing your career ageTake a step at a time.Just as a good personal trainer does an initial fitness assessment and comes up with a blueprint to help you reach your goals little by little, think of yourself as your own personal career trainer and work out a plan for your career success. You can make it general, but the more specific you are, the more direction you will give yourself, and the greater your chances for success.Adjust your tude.Adjust your attitude, that is. And lets be frank Sometimes if youve been at your career for a while and have achieved a certain amount of success, you may have settled into a little bit of complacency. This is not just an issue for older workers. Its more about being forward-thinking. Having a nimble mind-set is a good thing no matter what your age, but its especially smartfor the 50 or older crowd to take a proactive stance.Give your resume a workout.Sometimes less is more- both when it comes to physical fitness and when it comes to your career fitness. If you fall into the older worker category, be especially disciplined and go through a process of elimination and self-editing when you update your resume and write cover letters.Be mindful. The mind-body connection is another big trend in the fitness industry. Why not bring that thinking to your career as well? It makes sense that being mindful about your career has a huge effect on your health. Being mindful of what makes you happy- physically, emotionally, and otherwise- is as valid a concept in your career as in any other area of your life.Cross the finish line.Envisioning your career as a marathon rather than a sprint may help you put any little stumbles along the way into context. Tripping doesnt always mean falling, andknowing where your finish line is can help you keep going until you reach your goalReaders, tell us what you think your career age is and how you keep your career fit and nimblephotocredit thinkstockphotos.com

How to Address Major Concerns During a Job Interview

How to Address Major Concerns During a Job Interview How to Address Major Concerns During a Job Interview Lets say youve finally landed an interview for your dream job at the perfect company. Youve got the skills to do the work, and it looks like an ideal fit with your career plan. The only thing is, you have some major concerns and youre not sure how to address them. Maybe you know who your supervisor will be if you fill the open position, and youve heard through the grapevine that hes a micromanager and a bit of a shouter. How can you find out whether thats true without killing your chances at getting the job? Or, perhaps you highly value work flexibility, and youve read that this company isnt big on work-life balance. How  should you raise the issue? Your first step is to complete your due diligence. Before you set foot in the interviewers office, you should study the companys website and read any news articles you can find about the organization. Examine the social media accounts of the business, looking for what customers or employees are saying. And scour the web for blog posts of fans or detractors. Once your research is done, youll be ready to ask the right interview questions. If you handle your interview thoughtfully, with skill and tact, you should be able to address any concerns you have about the duties tied to the position, the companys culture, potential colleagues and managers, or the future of the business. Here are a few questions you can ask your interviewers to help you address major concerns during a job interview: What happened to the person who had this job before? This is a fair question, and if asked correctly, it can provide good insight into the scope of the job, its importance within the organization, and promotion opportunities for those who hold the position. If your concerns are centered on any of those areas, this could help alleviate them. What management style do you encourage among your team leaders? If youre afraid of getting stuck with that shouting micromanager, or someone who doesnt support the training of team members, this question is a good one to ask. Once you hear about the companys expectations of its managers, you can follow up by asking who your manager would be and what his or her style is like. What challenges might I encounter if I take on this position? This is one of many questions recommended in an article from Resume Butterfly. Your employers response to this could give you a better feel for any baggage that may be attached to the position, and how it could affect you. What stands out to you when you think of the companys culture? You may have concerns about the organizations support for work flexibility, its commitment to career development of employees, or just the general work environment. By asking this question, you should be able to discover some specifics about the company culture and whether the business is worker-friendly. Can you show me some examples of projects that Id be working on? This question, suggested in a Forbes article, could be the most important one you ask. If youre worried that your skills might not be the right fit for the job, or youve heard that the position carries huge expectations without the authority to meet them, the samples you receive could confirm or eliminate those concerns. Can you tell me about the team Ill be working with? An article from The Muse suggests that this question could help you uncover red flags. If the answer is vague, or the interviewer tries to dodge it, you might be walking into a bad situation with a toxic team. Where do you see this company in the next few years? This is another suggestion from The Muses article, which notes that the question can help you better understand the companys values and whether you fit well with them. If youve heard rumors that the business is struggling financially or may be considering a change in strategy, the tone of the answer you receive could provide some clues as to their veracity. No matter which questions you ask, be sure to listen carefully to the response. Note the interviewers tone when they respond, and look for other non-verbal cues to gather additional information. When you combine these questions with your initial research, you should be able to determine whether your fears are founded or baseless, without offending your interviewer and taking yourself out of the running for the job. Then, when an offer comes, youll be ready to respond with confidence, no matter what you decide. Have an interview coming up? Check out more tips in our  category dedicate to job interviewing.

Stressed About Your Job Hunt Heres How to Deal

Stressed About Your Job Hunt Here’s How to Deal Stressed About Your Job Hunt Here’s How to Deal I’ve been hunting for a new job for almost five months now, and it would be a lie to say that I’ve never felt anxious. There have been times  when anxious thoughts consumed me. Why hasn’t the recruiter e-mailed me back? What if the hiring manager didn’t like the answer to my question? When will I find my next job!? I haven’t totally eliminated my job search anxiety, but here is some advice that I have followed that help me feel less stressed. Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket At  the beginning of my job search was putting too much emphasis on one job. I would dwell on a  particular job and lose sight of all of the other opportunities around me. My advice is to apply to as many as jobs that you’re qualified for at this present moment. It’s nice to have options, and a job that didn’t seem interesting at first might become a front-runner once you’ve interviewed with the hiring manager. Dont judge a book by its cover. After you’ve sent in your application, just let it go. Worrying about whether an employer will contact you is a major time-suck, and your time can be better used applying for other jobs or researching other companies that interest you. Set action-oriented and realistic goals Landing a job has always been easy for me, so I started my job search with the goal of finding a job within one month. After one month, not only was I disappointed, but I also felt unmotivated by my goals. I decided to change how I set my benchmarks of job search success. I reworked my goals to make sure they involved a realistic action instead of goals that were vague that I can’t fully control. For example, apply to three jobs a week versus get hired by the end of the week. Applying to three jobs a week moves me forward in my job search, whereas getting hired by the end of the week is dependent on so many factors. Don’t compare yourself to others It was hard not to feel jealous when my friend was offered a job after one week of searching and I had been searching for months. Rather than  feeling bitter, I changed my outlook. I realized we both had different skill sets. She had some strengths I didn’t, and I had experience in some areas where she didn’t have any. Everyone has a different job search experience, so there is no use in comparing it to others. Find your own personal way to handle stress My number one way to de-stress is take a few minutes to focus on my breath and meditate. After that I feel rejuvenated and motivated to continue applying for jobs. Take the time each day to do something that will refresh and energize your mind like taking a walk, cooking or journaling. Child Support Allowance (BAH-DIFF)

Child Support Allowance (BAH-DIFF) Child Support Allowance (BAH-DIFF) Special rules apply for active duty members who live in the barracks and pay child support. Married members and members with custodial custody of children are considered to have dependents, (for housing purposes) and receive full-rate housing allowance (BAH), even if they reside temporarily in the barracks (such as in basic training, job school, or unaccompanied overseas assignment), in order to provide adequate financial support (housing) for their dependents. However, military members who dont have custody, and are paying child support, *ARE NOT* authorized to reside in the barracks and receive full-rate BAH. Instead, such members are paid an entitlement called BAH-DIFF, or BAH Differential. BAH-DIFF is the difference between the full married rate and full single rate of BAH Type II, (which is a different allowance than BAH type I, the full-rate active duty housing allowance). Learn What Information is Included on a Pay Stub

Learn What Information is Included on a Pay Stub Learn What Information is Included on a Pay Stub A pay stub, also known as a paycheck stub or pay slip, is the document that itemizes how much employees are paid. You will receive a pay stub for each pay period. It shows your total earnings for the pay period, deductions from the total, and your net pay after deductions. Your  net pay, also referred to as take-home pay, is how much you have left  over after taxes and other items have  been deducted from your pay. When employees are paid with a paper check, the pay stub will be attached to the paycheck. If employees are paid by direct deposit to their bank account, the pay slip should be available online to print, if a paper copy isnt provided by the employer. If you are provided with online paycheck stubs, your employer will advise you on how to log  in to view and print them. It’s a good idea to get into the habit of reviewing your pay stub and keeping either a physical or a digital copy, in case you ever need to verify your pay or deductions. This is especially important when you start a new job, so you can confirm that  all the  deductions in your first paycheck  are correct. When youre applying for a loan, renting an apartment, or buying a house, you may be asked to provide copies of your pay  stubs from a certain period of time. Reqesting recent and current pay  stubs is one way  that  employers verify employment. Its also a good idea to save copies of your pay stubs in case your employer gets something wrong, and you need to refer to the document while ironing things out with Human Resources. What Is Included on a Pay Stub? Pay stubs include the details of each pay periods wages including the following, depending on your personal circumstances: Gross pay: This is your pay before deductions for federal, state, and local taxes, as well as Medicare, Social Security, and any insurance or retirement contributions. Gross pay is what employers list when making a salary offer, e.g. $50,000 a year, divided by pay period.Federal taxes withheld: Federal tax withholding will depend on your  tax bracket. U.S. personal income taxes operate on a graduated scale, starting at 10 percent and increasing to the top rate of 37 percent (as of 2018). How much you pay will depend on how much you earn. State taxes withheld: States set their own personal income tax rates. Some have bracketed tax rates similar to the IRS, while others use a flat rate- and some states have no state income tax at all. State taxes can be complicated. For example, if you live in one state, but work in another, both states can’t tax the same income- but that doesn’t mean that non-residents are off the hook. See  this piece  for more information on state taxes and how they might affect you.Local taxes withheld: Some metro areas, like New York City, set their own local taxes, which pay for local government services. Benefit insurance deduction(s):  Health, dental, vision, life, disability- you might wind up contributing to any or all of these  employee benefits. If so, your share will likely be included on your pay stub.FICA: You might have seen this on your pay stub, but did  not know what it meant. FICA stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act. In short, it’s your contribution to Medicare and Social Security.Retirement or pension plan contribution: If your employer offers a retirement plan (e.g., a 401k, 403b, or pension), your contributions will show up on  your pay stub. Wage garnishments: Wage garnishment is when your employer withholds a certain amount of your paycheck to pay off your debt (for example, a tax bill or child support payments).Back pay: If your employer owes you back pay- for example because of an adjustment to your employment (hourly to salaried, or vice versa)- you might see the payout listed on your stub.Net pay:  This is the amount you receive after deductions- your actual paycheck, so to speak. If youre evaluating a job offer or starting a new job, you  can calculate your net pay  to get an estimate of how much youll earn. The pay stub may also include year-to-date totals of gross and net earnings and deductions. If you have questions about any of the items on your pay slip, check with your manager or company’s Human Resources department for clarification. They can advise you on your current deductions and on how to make changes to what is withheld from your gross pay. How to Calculate Your Net Pay There are websites which  you can use to calculate the deductions that will be withheld from your pay to estimate the amount of your paycheck: Paycheck Calculators How to Change Your Withholding Tax When you start a new job or want to change the amount of tax that is withheld from your paycheck, you will need to fill out a W-4 Form.  Heres how to complete the form. How to Get a Copy of Your Pay Stub Copies of pay slips are often required for credit applications or to otherwise verify employment. If you havent saved copies of your pay stubs, check to see if you can view and print them from the employee section of your company website or from the payroll service site that your employer uses. If you cant locate copies, ask the Payroll or Human Resources department of your employer if they can provide you with copies of your pay slips or a login to access them online.

TED Talk How to Use Gratitude in Your Job Search

TED Talk How to Use Gratitude in Your Job Search TED Talk How to Use Gratitude in Your Job Search 4Everywhere we look in the world today we can are reminded of the practice of gratitude. Gratitude is becoming a bit of a buzzword these days, showing up in all aspects of our lives, from how we eat to how we manage our finances. For job seekers, its about how to use gratitude in a job search. According to Brother David Steindl-Rast, an interfaith scholar and monk who delivered a TED talk on gratitude, us human beings have one thing in common- the desire to be happy. Happiness, as it happens, stems from gratitude, and not the other way around. Brother David Steindl-Rast is adamant to clear up this difference as it is often overlooked. To highlight this point, he shares an example of knowing people who have lots of material possessions, yet they are not happy because of a constant urge to obtain more. On the opposite end, there are people who have very little and who have suffered great tragedy, yet are radiating with happiness. How can this be? Because it is gratefulness that makes us happy, not happiness that makes us grateful. Brother David Steindl-Rast shares how we can not only have grateful experiences  but actually live gratefully. In realizing that every moment is a gift,  or a given moment as he calls it, we begin to notice the immense and unlimited opportunities that are presented to us each day, each hour, each minute. We have been raised to believe that “opportunity knocks only once,” yet he believes this to be quite the contrary, as every new moment is a gift, an opportunity. Brother David Steindl-Rast suggests that we can avail ourselves of these never-ending opportunities, or we can miss it. Once we open ourselves up to infinite opportunity, we then can unlock the key to happiness. Even when presented with a challenge, we can rise to the opportunity that has been given to us. In our hectic and overly scheduled lives we often times miss these signs of opportunity because we are rushing through them. Brother David Steindl-Rast suggests that we build in our own stop signs to slow down and relish in the opportunities that surround us every day. Drawing from the lessons we learned as a kid when learning to cross the street, we need to first stop, take a pause in our busy lives; look, to open all of our senses and our hearts; and  go, and take the opportunity and be creative. According to Brother David Steindl-Rast, when put into practice, gratefulness can have the following effects: It enables us to be less fearful, and therefore, less violent. You stop acting out of a place of scarcity and are more willing to share. Diversity and respect for all are embraced. How does this all relate to finding a job? There are numerous ways in which practicing gratitude can have an effect on our professional lives. Here are five tips on how to use gratitude in your job search: 1. Document your gratefulness. List five things about your current job/professional life that you are grateful for. Even if you are miserable in your current position, try and find five aspects of your job that you like, such as a coworker you get along with or your steady paycheck. In naming the things we are grateful for in life, we are generating feelings of appreciation that will spark happiness and keep us healthy. The law of attraction applies here as well. When you only focus on the negative aspects of your life, that is what you attract. Try shifting your perspective to a more positive one, and take notice of what shifts, big or small, happen in your life. 2. Don’t overlook any opportunities. Taking the advice from Brother David Steindl-Rast, opportunities are always surrounding us if we take the time to slow down and notice them. Even if you are faced with a bleak job market, or have experienced several rounds of unsuccessful interviews, what can you learn from that experience? Perhaps the opportunity was in creating a more fluid and streamlined resume, or in refining your interviewing skills.   3. Share with others. Sharing opportunities with others is one of the best ways to further manifest your own opportunities. In your job search you’re bound to come across a wealth of related articles, resources, and even potential job opportunities that may not be a good fit for you, but could be for a friend, relative, or colleague.   4. Keep a journal. Record your experience in expressing and sharing gratitude in a gratitude journal. The information you record could be more gratitude lists, daily steps you’ve taken to finding your dream job, or any progress you have made. 5. Express your gratitude to others. Last, but not least, is the practice of expressing your feelings of gratitude with your community. From sending a follow-up thank-you note to your prospective employer  to taking your friend out to lunch for her help on your resume, there are  no shortage of ways to thank the people in your life who are helping you find a better job. Time and energy Finding your personal ROI, and how to benefit from it

Time and energy Finding your personal ROI, and how to benefit from it Time and energy Finding your personal ROI, and how to benefit from it Let’s be honest. The word “investment” does not strike many of us as an interesting topic. We think of investments and hear stocks, bonds, real estate and other ways to increase our net worth. I mean, the definition of the term ROI is “the measure of gain or loss generated on an investment relative to the amount of money.”But a return on investment really should be defined as the benefit to an investor resulting from an investment of some resource. Why should it have a broad definition?A resource could be looked at as simply money but there are other resources used from an investment perspective that can benefit an investor. There are two other forms of resources that are not included in the original definition that are important to entrepreneurs and business owners: time and energy. Without ROI, we have no clue on whether our efforts are even worth our time - or if our energy could be better utilized elsewhere.TimeThey say time is money, right? Calculating what your time i s worth can be debatable, but everyone would agree that their time is worth something. Doing an ROI analysis on time-based subjects such as chores, tasks and other to-do items will dramatically change your life for the better.I sat down to figure out what my time is worth and came up with a value of $100/hour. That means that whatever I am doing better be worth $100/hour. If it’s not your strength and you don’t enjoy doing it, then you have to find a way to hire/outsource that task or to-do item to someone else. Not too long ago, I was mowing the lawn and fed up with the work. It was taking up a ton of my time - and at what cost? Hunched over, drenched in sweat and out of pure frustration I pulled out my phone and started to search for lawn care companies. Why was I wasting hours when I could be doing other things?I was seeing prices from $30-$50 a month to take care of my lawn. The ROI analysis was a no-brainer. I could spend $30-$50 a month on lawn care and save 4-5 hours a mo nth in time at a value of $100/hr. That’s a significant amount! My lawn needs mowing twice a month and it takes an average of two hours each time. My ROI analysis was pretty simple. I could waste four hours a month or pay a lawn company $60 a month to take care of my lawn. I personally value my time at $100 an hour and so lawn care would cost me $400 per month. By paying $60, I save four hours to work on my business or to spend time with family.Your return on investment in regards to your time can also be calculated. As entrepreneurs, business owners, employees, students, etc. we all have some type of value for our time. But it’s not just time. Energy can be another factor for determining ROI.EnergyWhen eating, for example, there is a big correlation between the food that you choose to eat and the type of ROI it will return when measured as energy. If you choose to eat a large lunch at McDonald’s, you will most likely return a negative ROI on your energy level. You will feel le thargic, slow and not focused to accomplish the rest of the day. Typically large greasy meals that have more carbohydrates will return a negative ROI on your energy. If you choose to eat a kale salad, though, you will actually notice that your body is producing more energy. Let me give you some examples of real-life ROI scenarios that I use: Choosing What to Eat for Breakfast Choosing What to Wear in the Morning: I calculated that I could spend 15 minutes every morning picking out what to wear to work that day or I could lay out my options the night before. What Time to Leave for Work Every Day Based on the Commute: How long will I have to spend in traffic? Think about it. Investment is a great topic - especially if there is everything to gain in your everyday life. What is your ROI?Ken Brokaw is the author of Leveling Up Your Life: Build a Business Around Your Life, Not A Life Around Your Business. 7 networking questions to ask that will make you more likable

7 networking questions to ask that will make you more likable 7 networking questions to ask that will make you more likable To many, networking events sound as appealing as getting teeth pulled, but that doesn’t mean they have to be so dreadful. Instead, great networking is all about having questions ready that start actual conversations, not mundane small talk.  After asking dozens of professionals their go-to networking questions, I found two important patterns. First, the best questions are open-ended and can’t be answered with a simple yes or no; think essay questions instead of multiple choice. Second, the key to good networking may surprise you: don’t talk just about work. If you’ve ever worked in London, or in Europe, you’ll be familiar with the belief that people represent more than their job titles and salaries. Get to know the person in front of you.    I asked some of the most successful people I know how they sharpened their networking skills.  Here were the top seven responses that came up over and over again.1) “What are your hobbies?Ӊ€œI’ve found out that colleagues’ non- work projects include woodworking, gardening, marathon training, volunteer firefighting, baking pastries and vocal lessons,” explains Brittany Meyers, a writer and editor. “I like the enthusiasm I see in people for something besides their work.”Plus, Brittany says that knowing people’s hobbies makes it easier to remember everyone since getting faces and name tags straight is a challenge.2) “What are you reading these days?Ӊ€œAsking what’s on someone’s nightstand or e-reader tells you more about the person you’re meeting than a LinkedIn profile or business card ever could,” notes Felicia Sullivan,  marketing consultant and founder of Phoebe Kate. This one not only leads to more meaningful conversations, but it also makes it easier to follow up with people afterward. “We met at that networking event” isn’t as memorable as “so glad we got to talk about our mutual love of House of Cards.”3) “Any good travel plans coming up?Ӊ€œI was born and raised in Texas, lived for almost 15 years in California, lived in Boston [and] Mexico and traveled to Australia and Europe before landing back in Texas,” says Kat Clemons, director of community development at nonprofit Hope Village. “I love finding out that people have awesome traveling stories or are from somewhere totally different.”You can also ask people where they grew up, but note that the question can be misinterpreted as a loaded one for minorities or immigrants since it can have an implication of “you’re not from around here.” If they volunteer it, however, feel free to dive into a conversation about it.Everyone has an origin story, or they’re planning a trip soon, so there’s bound to be an interesting conversation without having to drop the “so, what do you do?” question right off the bat.4) “I love that scarf! Where did you get it?Ӊ€œI find that genuinely complimenting someone on a statement piece that they are wearing immediately breaks the ice, as it mak es the other person feel good and they are more open during the conversation,” explains Chanele McFarlane,  founder and editor-in-chief of Do Well Dress Well.Additionally, McFarlane notes that wearing something interesting (like an bold necklace or bright blazer) to a networking event is a great way to use appearance as a conversation-starter.5. “Do you have a ‘wow’ project you’re involved with?”If you want to elevate the typical “what do you do?” question, add a little nuance by letting people brag. “It assumes [people] do have a significant project in the works and allows them to talk about whatever is at the top of their mind,” explains David Burrows, a tech entrepreneur. Who doesn’t like to show off the things they’re most proud of?6) “What are you passionate about?Ӊ€œPeople are used to be asked what they do and where they work, so I’ve seen them be pleasantly startled by this question,” says Tammy Tibbetts, founder and CEO of nonprofit She’s T he First. “It’s a way of showing you care about them more than who they work for.”Asking this doesn’t have to sound like a stiff job interview question, either; working it into the conversation can be as easy as, “So if you weren’t doing [job], what would you do instead?”7) “Have you been to [city] or [event space] before? What’s it like?” Bonding over your physical surroundings or the general event environment makes for a much more natural conversation starter than asking what someone does. “I’ve learned a lot about people because of this approach,” says Melissa Jones, recruitment and HR specialist at the United Technologies Research Center. “It breaks up the monotony of where you work, which you’ll eventually get around to anyway.”This article was first published on March 24, 2017.
